According to the Idaho Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics, Alzheimer’s disease was listed as the fifth leading cause of death in Idaho. Although Alzheimer’s disease is the most recognized, there are over 100 different types of dementias. Since Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) takes years to develop, there are opportunities for clinicians to help patients develop and maintain healthy lifestyle habits that could reduce their risk of ADRD or slow its progression. In fact, studies indicate that nearly 40% of ADRD cases may be prevented or delayed.

This series aims to:

  • Employ best practices in patient care for common health conditions among adults with dementia in order to ease assessment/treatment burdens for patients and their caregivers and optimize care in settings with limited resources.
  • Propose appropriate medication and treatment plans for adults with dementia in order to improve quality of life.
  • Identify risks associated with polypharmacy among persons living with dementia in order to optimize medical care.
  • Increase community awareness and PCP confidence in early detection, diagnosis and treatment of ADRD.
  • Raise awareness and deployment of dementia prevention strategies for those at highest risk.
